Shock jock Travis Carter dumped from radio show after sexist comments were aired about reporter Rangi Hirini

Former One Nation candidate Travis Carter has been dumped from his weekly community radio show after sexist comments were aired about The West Australian reporter Rangi Hirini. In a segment hosted by Mr Carter, Ms Hirini was labelled an “extremist” neo-feminist, with one guest accusing the Aboriginal affairs correspondent of telling Indigenous people what to eat in a column she penned on toxic masculinity. Station presenter and board chair for 89.7FM Sue Myc said Mr Carter was “let go” after soon-to-be former West Australia Party MP Charles Smith and guest Joel Jammal made sexist and disparaging on-air comments about Ms Hirini. The trio on Tuesday took issue with Ms Hirini’s opinion piece in which she challenged the idea that “real men” don’t eat vegan. Mr Smith called Hirini an “extremist” neo-feminist. “The feminine side of the woman is nurturing and caring and looking after a family unit,” he said. “A masculine man traditionally went out and did the job. He went out and provided and protected the family. His lovely wife would raise a home and family and look after everything. “Now governments have forced both partners to go out to work to get by and those roles have been ruined. Now we’re questioning what gender we are; what’s masculine, what’s feminine.” In one odious exchange, Mr Jammal said: “I prefer my women shaved.” Carter responded the comment was “fine”, adding: “You’re the guest, you’re allowed to say whatever you like. We’ve got disclaimers and things like that.” However, Ms Myc said the comments were not fine. “Mr Carter has been suspended. He will not be returning,” she said. In a statement posted to Facebook, station management said the program did not meet its standards. “Our station leadership has worked for months to improve behavioural standards at the station,” the statement said. “We take responsibility for ensuring this does not happen again and that the presenters involved understand the gravity of comments on the show, including through disciplinary action.” The sacking comes just three months after station manager Aaron Malloy was fired. Malloy unsuccessfully ran for the seat of Joondalup in 2017 on a platform that men were discriminated against by the Family Court.
