Independent candidate says they will ‘push back’ the introduction of the controversial ban on live export

A candidate in the upcoming battle for Forrest has said she will delay the ban on live export to ensure farmers are adequately supported. Independent candidate for Forrest Dr Sue Chapman said she will fight to “push back” the introduction of the ban on live export if successful in the upcoming Federal election. Dr Chapman said the Labor Government’s highly controversial ban failed to adequately consult and collaborate with farmers and rural communities, which has resulted in a poorly timed and under-resourced push to phase out of live sheep exports. “The time frame and the transition support funding are inadequate and unjust for farmers,” she said. “After consulting with farmers and the Western Australian Farmers Federation, I will also advocate strongly for an additional $100 million for impacted farmers, on top of the $107 million transition support package, to be directed toward forward pricing to produce lambs and the associated cost of feed. “The meat processing facilities in Forrest are ready to expand to take on increased onshore processing, while the redevelopment of the Busselton Margaret River Airport will include cold freight opening up new, more lucrative markets for farmers to sell processed meat.” The Federal election will be held on Saturday, May 3.
