Police have released footage of the moment a sea kayaker was rescued after his boat capsized off Woodman Point.

Water police received a report about 3.40pm on April 17 that a man had capsized from his kayak about two nautical miles (3.7km) off Woodman Point in Cockburn Sound.

The distressed man sought help by swimming to a nearby kayaker, holding on before help arrived.

Water police, a Westpac Lifesaver rescue helicopter, and Cockburn Marine Rescue were deployed to help find the man.

A Royal Australian Navy warship also responded to the distress signal.

The kayaker was pulled from the water by a marine rescue boat and taken to shore.

He did not require medical attention.

The other male was able to paddle back to shore safely.

WA Police reminded those heading out on the water to always wear a life jacket, and carry a registered and up to date EPIRB with GPS-enabled tracking to alert authorities to emergency situations.
