City of Rockingham welcomes latest art showcase Beyond Surface from Valerie Schonjahn and Miguel Castro

The Rockingham Arts Centre will soon showcase some of the State’s finest ceramic and paper works, with exhibition Beyond Surface kicking off this week. Curated by the talented Valerie Schonjahn and Miguel Castro, Beyond Surface will run from March 8-April 2 and is the latest free exhibition delivered as part of the arts centre’s annual exhibition program. The theme of the exhibition is ”visual conversations in paper and clay”. The pieces on display will showcase Schonjahn’s work specialising in clay and ceramics, as well as Castro’s renowned paper cutting skills. The artists will also host clay and paper cutting workshops at which community members can learn from the experts about how each art form works. Mayor Deb Hamblin said the City of Rockingham was “delighted” to host Beyond Surface, and encouraged the community to explore the “fascinating exhibition” while they had the chance. “Last year the City delivered a $400,000 refurbishment to the RAC, and part of these works focused on strengthening the flexibility and function of the facility so the City can deliver enhanced art exhibitions,” Ms Hamblin said. “This joint exhibition . . . composes a number of distinct individual pieces that are open to interpretation.” The opening night of Beyond Surface will run from 6pm-8pm on March 11.
