Two grants worth over $50,000 set to help Kwinana’s beachfront erosion

Two Coastwest grants worth more than $50,000 will be used to tackle the coastal erosion along Kwinana’s beachfront.

The State Government’s Coastwest has provided a coastal capacity building grant of $30,000 to Perth NRM to offer planting days and workshops in Kwinana and across the Perth metropolitan area.

This project will engage current and prospective community Coastcare volunteers in training, knowledge sharing, skills development and education focused on coastal conservation and restoration.

Local government coastal managers will also participate in the series of events targeting the areas of on-ground restoration of coastal sites, mobilising and empowering the community, and the application of new coastal and marine management research.

A further $21,608 will be given to Perth NRM to activate the Kwinana-Rockingham Coastcare community.

This project will engage and support four emerging Coastcare groups within the Kwinana and Rockingham regions to deliver a series of coastal conservation events to attract local community volunteers, build knowledge and awareness around coastal threats and management, and provide positive on-ground outcomes for project sites.

Activities will include planting and manual weed management, marine debris collection and a targeted education event.

The City hosts a Perth NRM representative to support the local community in its efforts to improve the condition of the local coastline, City of Kwinana chief executive officer Wayne Jack said.

“These funds will increase the community’s capacity to engage with and preserve their natural coastline and improve areas like the popular Wells Park, which is prone to damage along its edge by storm surges,” Mr Jack said.

“Photo monitoring of erosion at Kwinana’s beaches by Perth NRM will continue to be supported, and the City has been a long-time host of the Perth NRM and its work with the local community.”

The Coastwest grants are part of $18.5 million announced by the State Government in August over the next five years to fight erosion and protect Western Australia’s coastline.
