On track for top two
The Rockingham Sharks remain on course for a top-two finish to the WA Rugby League season following a thrilling 19-18 win over South Perth at the weekend.
The Sharks had not beaten Souths at Lark Hill for over a decade, but were finally given cause for celebration courtesy of a late field goal from captain Caleb Reedy.
Rockingham enjoyed the better of the early exchanges, but were unable to make the most of some good field position.
South Perth opened the scoring, before the home side responded to level scores at 6-6 by half-time.
Despite having five regular starting players absent, the Sharks started the second half full on running and crossed twice in quick succession to open an 18-6 lead.
However, their kicking game fell away and allowed Souths some good field position in the closing stages.
The reigning premiers capitalised with two tries to level the match at 18-18. It was left to Reedy to seal a thrilling win with a long range field goal in the dying minutes.
Rowan Hastings, Karl Johnson and Josh Simm crossed for Rockingham, while Reedy rammed home the advantage with three conversions.
Johnson’s try highlighted a best-on- ground effort from the former North Queensland Cowboys and Newcastle Knights centre.
The result cements Rockingham in second spot behind competition leaders North Beach.
They hold a 5-2 win loss record and have the benefit of a bye this weekend.
The Sharks return to action with an away match against Joondalup Giants on June 16.
