Sailing: State's best are put to the test

The 29er, M27, Tornado and Minnow State championships were held at The Cruising Yacht Club in testing conditions over the last two weekends.

The 29er fleet was strong this year, with 16 competitors from TCYC, Mounts Bay Sailing Club and Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club hitting the water.

Rockingham sailors Shane Phillips and Luke Humphreys on Kinetic, along with Ben Underwood and Cameron Dunn on Evolv, battled it out with Ella Guidici and Courtney Higgins from Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club.

In a battle to the last race, that went to four countbacks, Guidici and Higgins became 2011 State champions.

Phillips and Humphreys finished second ahead of Underwood and Dunn.

In the Minnow fleet, Rockingham sailor Kane Orvad led the competition on Knock Out to take first place by a small margin from JackKelly from Shelley Sailing Club. Rockingham’s Dale Brett was third.

In the Novice fleet, TCYC stormed the field with Taylah Geling taking out first place, followed by Mary Lewis and Hannah Page.

The Minnow fleet has again been strong this year, with good representation from TCYC, Shelley Sailing Club and Dunsborough Yacht Club.
