Just a few weeks ago, volunteer firefighter Shirley Oliver was awarded the Baldivis Bushfire Brigade's highest honour.

Now, the respected firefighter and member of the brigade's team of volunteers will go head-to-head with nominees from across the State for a coveted Department of Fire and Emergency Services WA Firefighting Award.

Mrs Oliver, who has served with the Baldivis brigade for more than 25 years, said she was humbled and excited to be named among the nominees in the coveted Murray Lang Bushfire Service Award category.

She said she did not expect recognition for her role as response officer, but looked forward to a special ceremonial breakfast at the Perth Convention Centre in October.

Senior firefighter Karl Gill said the nomination was a huge honour for Mrs Oliver and for the Baldivis Volunteer Bushfire Brigade.

Mr Gill said nominations on a Statewide level happened very infrequently.

"I absolutely believe Shirley deserves to win - it is quite an honour," he said. "Shirley is extremely dedicated.

"Nothing is too hard for her and she works tirelessly for the good of the brigade, and for the community.

"Shirley considers the brigade her family, but everyone here feels the same about her - it would be very difficult to run the operation without her."

Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner Wayne Gregson said all career and volunteer firefighters provided an invaluable contribution, but this year's 16 awards finalists had excelled in their roles.
