With a vision to inspire lifelong learning, Comet Bay Primary School has impressed judges at the WA Education Awards.

The school is one of four finalists in the running to be named WA primary school of the year.

Open for only eight years, principal Graeme Watson said it was exciting for a school so young to be selected.

"I guess we have been consistent over the eight years, we've had a direction, we've kept with that direction and our community clearly knows what we stand for," he said.

"Our school is set up on the health promoting schools framework which means we value the kids' academic, social and emotional wellbeing."

To become a finalist, the school had to meet criteria in the categories of student achievement, positive learning environment, high quality teaching and effective leadership, community engagement, and resource management.

Deputy principal Jen Roberts said she believed school leaders had built a strong culture of inclusion and positivity.

"I think we have really unique and talented teachers that make all the difference," she said.

"We offer a lot to develop the talents of the whole child, through the kitchen garden program, through our specialist subjects, and also with a focus on a sense of belonging and inclusion in the classroom."

Like the school slogan, Mr Watson said the 1072-student school and its surrounding community was "growing together".

Comet Bay is up against Wattle Grove, Coolbinia, and Bruce Rock primary schools for the award. Panel members will visit the school in the coming weeks.

Award winners will be announced in December.
