Falcons outclass Brumbies
South Mandurah Falcons proved their value as league front-runners last Sunday with a comprehensive 69-point victory over Baldivis Brumbies.
The 20.13 (133) to 9.10 (64) scoreline at Baldivis Oval reflected South Mandurah's scoreboard pressure while Baldivis struggled for steady footing and kicking accuracy.
The first quarter began in damp conditions as a competitive affair, and the Brumbies dominated the hitouts, thanks to ruckman Kyle Westwood.
The home side was first to hit the scoreboard when tenacious midfielder Jakeb Bilsborough had an audacious snap from the boundary shepherded over the line for a goal.
Both teams then traded majors in the early stages, with Baldivis' Luis Whythes particularly influential in contests and contributing a goal.
The Brumbies could be proud of their efforts going into the first break only two points behind the Alcoa Peel Football League leaders.
South Mandurah showed their class after quarter time, however, with a dominant seven-goal second quarter.
After an innocuous start, Falcons full-forward Samuel Hart became the focal point of his side's attacks on and off the field.
Hart managed four goals in this period and ensured the home spectators were well aware of the fact with a flamboyant celebration routine.
Quick goals to Baldivis and the decision to send an extra man into defence as the half came to a close limited the damage to a 28-point margin.
Unfortunately for the home side, the goals dried up in the second half as South Mandurah continued to improve towards an 11-goal victory.
Westwood remained a force in the ruck for the Brumbies despite struggling for protection from umpires, as opponents attempted to counter his athleticism with some forceful contact in the contest.
Forward Daniel Kimberley, on the back of a six-goal haul in his previous outing, ended the day with two goals to his name.
Kimberley also struggled with umpiring decisions after being called for numerous pushes on opponents throughout the second half, some more questionable than others.
Tough midfielder Blair Bell was especially influential for the Falcons and capped off a productive game with a goal in the last term.
Meanwhile, his South Mandurah teammate Bradley Holmes was clearly best on ground thanks to his hard work, six goals and - most sensationally - an outrageous multiple-effort mark towards the end of the game.
Baldivis league coach Michael McCann believed what began as a close game slowly got away from his side, as his opponents were too classy.
"It was a tight and hard contest in the first quarter, but we fell away from our strong contested footy after that," he said.
"It was disappointing." With a two-week break before the derby against Rockingham Rams, McCann hopes his side can begin to shape up for the finals.
"The game with Rockingham should be tight and firey," he said.
"We have four to five players coming back after the break that would be starters in our best 18."
