First day on the beat

Juggling community expectations and upholding the law is what Rockingham's newest probationary constables are learning in their second posting out of the WA Police Academy.

On his first day in the role, Prob. Const. Ben Delaney said he looked forward to proving his capabilities and hoped to put his university degree in forensics to good use in that area of policing.

Fresh from his first posting with traffic police, Prob. Const. Delaney said being on the beat and working with the local policing teams was a different style of policing.

"I'm learning how to communicate with the public, which is something that can be taught," he said.

Fellow Prob. Const. Magdalena Kristancic agreed working with the Rockingham team was more complex than her stint with the random breath test team and she was enjoying the challenge of writing her own briefs, conducting search warrants, arresting people and conducting interviews.

As a nurse before joining the academy, Prob. Const. Kristancic said she would be interested in putting her science background to good use in forensics or detectives, but was open to trying anything.

"We will see where it takes me," she said.

The pair agreed working in the force put their mentally and physically challenging training into perspective.

"It was very team-orientated and you became close with other members, but it was very strict," Prob. Const. Delaney said.

"It's a challenge, but an accomplishment to finish," Prob. Const. Kristancic said.
