Kwinana Dance Festival has all the right moves

Unbridled joy, spirit and obvious passion are the attributes that will set winners apart from the rest at this year's Kwinana Dance Festival, according to adjudicator Alice Lee Holland.

The Perth-based Steps Youth Dance Company choreographer said she looked forward to watching eight days of performances in disciplines including classical, jazz, hip-hop, contemporary, acro and slow-modern, as part of the 24th annual event, which kick off later this week.

Ms Holland said she believed the next generation of dancers were incredibly inspiring.

She said she was always amazed to see the wonderful work taking place south of Perth.

"The dancers who really stand out are those who display unbridled joy and spirit," she said.

"Of course, technique is important but someone who is absolutely immersed in what they are doing is amazing to watch."

Rockingham-based Dynamite Dance will offer more than 150 entrants, ranging in age from four to 67, school principal Tania O'Gorman said.

Mrs O'Gorman said students had been busy preparing for one of the year's most important competitions, and hoped to pick up the coveted award for highest school aggregate for the second year running.

"Last year, we took the majority of prizes, so it would be great to do the same thing ," she said.

"We've also won the award for best acro troupe the last four years, so would like to make it number five this year."

Kwinana Dance Festival kicks off at Koorliny Arts Centre, Sulphur Road, Parmelia on Saturday.
