Police say a young woman has been left traumatised after she was physically and sexually assaulted in her Mandurah home by a man in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Detectives from the sex assault squad have been called in to investigate the terrifying incident which happened about 3.10am.

Police say an unknown man entered the home on Allnutt Street before he attacked the woman who was asleep.

“The male entered a bedroom of the home and allegedly sexually assaulted a female occupant, before leaving the home,” a police spokesman said.

At a press conference on Tuesday Detective Senior Sergeant Clinton Bragg said the attack was both scary and traumatic for the woman — who is aged in her 20s.

“It’s alleged that he (the man) attacked her in her bed before she screamed and he ran off,” Det. Sgt Bragg said.

“The public have a right to feel safe in their bed.

“The young lady is very traumatised and this is unacceptable.”

Det. Sgt Bragg said police had spent all day in the Mandurah area canvassing for CCTV and speaking to witnesses.

He said some people who lived with the woman came to her aid when they heard her screams.

“Lucky for her, when she screamed they came to her assistance,” the officer said, adding that police would be doing all they could to catch the person responsible.

“We’ve spent all day there (in Mandurah), the investigation is still centred around that area,” he said.

“We don’t have a suspect at this stage but we have got numerous lines of inquiry and we will use every resource available to find this person.”

The wanted man is described as being aged in his 30s, and has a heavy build and short hair.

Detectives are urging anyone with information relating to the incident, or who saw any suspicious activity in the area, to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via www.crimestopperswa.com.au.

Dashcam from anyone who travelled on Allnutt Street – near Mandurah Road – between 2.30am and 4am, can upload it directly to detectives via this link.
