The final environmental tick of approval for the Mangles Bay marina development is expected to be announced early next month.

A spokeswoman for Federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt said a decision was imminent and should be published on the department website on October 7.

Greens Senator Scott Ludlam said peaceful community action, as well as last-minute letters to Mr Hunt outlining crucial new evidence, had delayed the decision.

Senator Ludlam said he planned to table a petition containing more than 500 signatures, collected at a Hands Off Point Peron community picnic attended by up to 500 people 10 days ago, to the Senate on Monday.

He said it was the community who had uncovered inherently flawed environmental reviews on the threatened species at nearby Lake Richmond which he believed had promoted Mr Hunt to delay the decision.

Hands Off Point Peron chairwoman Dawn Jecks said the delayed decision was a huge victory for community members opposed to the canal development.

Ms Jecks said sufficient studies into the potential effect on groundwater close to the site had not been completed.
