Plan to rezone derelict hotel

The City of Kwinana has initiated an amendment to the Town Planning Scheme to rezone the land occupied by the derelict Naval Base Hotel.

The amendment seeks to rezone Lot 116, Rockingham Road, from special use to general industry to allow redevelopment for a fuel station.

The site has been identified by BP Australia as suitable for a service centre for vehicles in the Kwinana industrial area.

It is expected that as the Latitude 32 Industrial Area develops to the south of the site, along with the Cockburn Port to the north, there will be a demand for a service centre.

Kwinana Mayor Carol Adams said the Naval Base Hotel was in a steady state of decline.

"The land owner chose to permanently close the hotel in April and since then it has been subjected to antisocial behaviour and vandalism and there was a fire at the premises in October," she said.

"The building is now in a state of disrepair and has been issued Health Act notices, which will require it to be demolished before the end of the year.

"The council has decided that the amendment will be referred to the Environmental Protection Authority as required by the Planning and Development Act."

If the EPA indicates the amendment does not require a formal environmental assessment, the amendment will be advertised for 42 days in accordance with the regulations.
