Rockers raise glass to Britpop legends

Fans of 90s Britpop are invited to roll with it next month as Oasis tribute band Champagne Hoovernosa take the stage at The Chase Bar and Bistro for the first time.

Vocalist Timothy Nelson, who will take on the part of larger-than-life front man Liam Gallagher, said the tribute act began as a bit of a laugh as part of the Newport Record Club in Fremantle.

He said vocalist and guitarist Steve Hensby, guitarist and keyboard player Jozef Grech, drummer Todd Pickett, bassist Johnny Foley and guitarist Dale Shearsmith were also in original bands, but enjoyed sending up Oasis so much they decided to make the side project a regular gig.

"I was brought up on The Beatles and never really listened to modern music, until I saw Wonderwall on TV when I was about six - suddenly I was obsessed," Nelson said.

"Once I grew up into a more conscious human being, I really got into Britpop - my mum's English so I could always relate to the culture. We're basically all Oasis fanatics."

Nelson said he loved getting into character and adopting some of the infamous Liam Gallagher swagger.

He said while he didn't particularly dress up, the signature Gallagher scarf and sunglasses were a must.

"We all love to do Liam impersonations - it can be hard to come back from playing Liam and I end up having a bit of an identity crisis afterwards," Nelson said. "It's a brilliant form of entertainment for us."

Nelson said Champagne Hoovernosa originally paid homage to 1995s award-winning album (What's the Story) Morning Glory, but the guys had incorporated more of Oasis' discography, playing B-sides and rarities.
