When Sarah Howat left school after Year 10, she wanted to do her own thing - go travelling and start a family.

Years later the Port Kennedy mother joined 30 fellow students in graduating from the Murdoch University OnTrack program at Rockingham Campus last week, giving her career options a boost.

Ms Howat said she was never really interested in school but wanted to study nursing years later and the 14-week program, which focused on academic writing and other core skills required for university study, had allowed her to pursue her dream.

She said she looked forward to enrolling at South Street early next year.

"I was never really bothered about school and didn't finish Year 12, but after I had my daughter, who is now four, I decided I wanted to go back into study," Ms Howat said.

University lecturer Dr Jane Maw said OnTrack aimed to improve students' skills in preparation for full-time study.

"The program is available for those aged 17 and upwards, but we do tend to enrol mature students over the age of 22," Dr Maw said.

"The Rockingham Campus is still vibrant and OnTrack numbers are steadily growing."
