Rockingham’s Penguin Island population to be relocated to mainland after discovery centre plans scrapped

Penguin Island’s captive little penguin population is set to moved to mainland WA in six months, with the discovery centre on the island to be demolished. A Department of Biodiversity Conservation and Attractions spokesperson confirmed the centre was “reaching the end of its serviceable life” and the centre would be closed at the end of the 2022-23 visitor season in early June. “The centre will ultimately be demolished and the area rehabilitated to provide additional habitat for the estimated 300 wild penguins that continue to use the island for breeding, moulting, socialising and resting,” they said. Perth Wildlife Encounters owner Terry Howsen said his business — which operates ferries to and tours on the island — brought more than 120,000 visitors to the island each year and made a huge contribution to the State and Rockingham economy. Mr Howsen said the island would lose 30 to 35 years of marketing and building a brand due to the DBCA’s decision. “It wouldn’t have a brand anymore, it would be ripped up instantly,” he said. “It would be gone and so would 45 jobs we directly employ, plus the effects on Rockingham and other operators around here. It would have a huge knock-on effect.” The DBCA said the welfare of the seven captive little penguins at the centre was “of the utmost importance”. “DBCA will continue to care for them until a suitable new home is found on the WA mainland where they can be integrated into other captive little penguin populations,” they said. “So far during the 2022 breeding season, which is still underway, wild little penguins have laid 59 eggs at monitored nesting sites across the island — the highest recorded in five years. This comes after an extended winter closure of the island.” The Department earlier this year scrapped plans to build a multi-million dollar new centre on the island and committed $250,000 to investigate the feasibility of a new facility at Mersey Point or elsewhere on the mainland. “This decision follows careful consideration of feedback from the City of Rockingham, local tourism operators and local penguin researchers who did not support the construction of a new replacement facility on Penguin Island,” the DBCA spokesperson said. The little penguin population on the island has declined rapidly due to climate change and boat injuries, with numbers dropping by 80 per cent between 2007 and 2019.
