Safe space in Kwinana for positivity

Constant bullying from his peers and contemplating suicide led a Kwinana teenager to want to affect positive change through a youth group focused on creating a more tolerable society.

The group Inside Out held its first meeting on Friday night at the Zone Kwinana Youth Space after more than six months of planning by 15-year-old leader Zach Silvester.

He said the drive to create a safe space where people felt accepted, regardless of their sexuality or gender identity, stemmed from learning about a Kwinana teenager who took his life.

Zach said after reading the book the Geography Club by Brett Hartinger, about a group of students from different social groups supporting each other, he wanted to set up a program in Kwinana to help break down the negativity.

With support from Uniting Care West True Colours, which focus on sexuality and gender identity, the Gilmore College student created a 10-week structure which includes exercises on team building, trust, sports and round table talks with youth workers.

"We are now appalled at the concept of slaves, I'm hoping in time that same thought will apply to gay marriage and gender identity," Zach said.

"I've been bullied and physically assaulted for being gay - I've been through emotional trauma and mental health issues and considered taking my own life.

"What we are doing here is trying ways of making everyone feel accepted."

Inside Out meets on Fridays from 4.30pm to 7pm.
