Woman who killed two sons found dead at home weeks after prison release

A woman who spent more than a decade behind bars for killing her two sons has been found dead just weeks after she was released from jail.
Donna Fitchett, 66, was sentenced in 2010 to 27 years’ jail with a non-parole period of 18 years for drugging and smothering her sons Thomas, 11, and Matthew, 9 in 2005.
Fitchett was released from prison in February after nearly 20 years behind bars, the Herald Sun reports.

The former nurse was found dead at a Melbourne property on King St in Prahran shortly after 7pm on Monday after concerns for welfare.
“The death is not being treated as suspicious,” a Victoria Police statement read.
The Supreme Court was told the woman was depressed by the breakdown of her marriage and wanted to take her own life and her two sons with her.

Fitchett gave her sons a cocktail of drugs before smothering and strangling them to death, penning a note to her ex-husband apologising for the “pain upon the discovery of what I have done”.
The Melbourne woman pleaded not guilty to the murders due to mental illness and said the killing was the “greatest act of love”.
However, the reasoning was rejected by Justice Curtain, who said the crime was the “greatest act of betrayal”.
