Anthony Albanese was given a less than welcome reception by the crowd at the Australian Open on Sunday night after he was introduced during the tennis championship’s closing ceremony.

After Jannik Sinner beat Daniil Medvedev to claim the men’s title the Prime Minister was welcomed by presenter Todd Woodbridge on behalf of Tennis Australia.

But members of the 15,000-strong audience could be heard loudly jeering, forcing Woodbridge to stop his speech momentarily.

The reaction came just days after Mr Albanese announced he would controversially amend the stage three tax cuts.

The prime minister said he was making the changes in response to Australia’s cost-of-living crisis, to provide relief for “middle Australia”.

The proposed tax cuts will see higher-income earners’ benefits trimmed in favour of bigger cuts for workers earning less than $150,000.

However, many have criticised the overhaul as a “broken promise” after he went to the last election promising to deliver the tax cuts in full. Those had promised all workers earning between $45,001 and $200,000 to move to a new 30 per cent tax bracket from July 1.

Ahead of Wednesday’s caucus meeting, Mr Albanese said he had to “make the right decision, not the easy decision” in the face of Australia’s current economic situation — which has changed since the initial stage three tax cuts were legislation in 2019.
