A look ahead to the draft

As we await anything to happen on the trade table, here are the players the clubs will likely be fighting over in the draft.

It’s a deep pool this year with plenty of midfield talent with the national combine held over the weekend.

More of WA’s top talent will be in action later today in the state combine.

And now into day 4

News from the wider AFL world

As we await trades the Hawthorn racism trial continues with the Hawks’ legal team making some stunning allegations against a former players.

Jack Macrae situation

The Bulldogs midfielder requested a trade to the Saints nearly a month ago but the two clubs are yet to meet and talk about the move.

Add this one to the list of deals that lokiely won’t happen until the final hours.

Matt Rosa provides more info on Stringer.

“No he has [not given] a formal position,” Essendon list boss Matt Rosa said on Trade Radio.

“We’re in constant contact with Jake’s management and we’ll work through that as more information comes to light.

“He’s locked into a one-year deal and we’ve been in discussions around the tenure aspect and we are aware he’s looking for security at the age he’s at.”

Latest on Jake Stringer

It seems increasingly likely the Essendon forward will find a third home at GWS as he looks to secure a longer-term deal that the Bombers won’t offer him.

St Kilda re-sign veteran duo

Zak Jones and Dougal Howard have both signed one-year extensions to stay at St Kilda.

Howard played 15 games this year after recovering from a wrist injury while Jones will play on his sixth year at the Saints since coming over from the Swans in 2020.

Collingwood the overwhelming favourite to get Dan Houston

The Herald Sun’s John Ralph says Carlton are no chance of landing the Port star given their want to have draft capital this year and unwillingness to budge on picks.

The Power don’t have a pick until 39 and are desperate to as much action in the first round as they can.

With the Pies more likely to get a high pick from the Suns for John Noble and having the sweetener of Joe Richards who wants a trade, they are now heavy favourites to land the two-time All-Australian.

Some early news

Giants forward Conor Stone will stay with GWS after signing a new two-year deal.

He played just four games this season with the former first-round draft pick plagued by injuries in his four year of AFL.

The current state of play

Richmond are at the centre of a frustrating hold-up in this year’s trade period as they refuse to budge on three of the biggest deals of 2024.
