West Australian tyro Cooper Connolly wants to play an overseas competition for the first time at The Hundred.

The 21-year-old — who made a shock appearance in Australia’s Champions Trophy loss to India earlier this week — is one of a host of high-profile Australians to nominate for the United Kingdom-based tournament.

Steve Smith has retired from one-day-international cricket in part to ramp up his commitments in tournaments like this, while David Warner has also nominated again despite being left undrafted last season and without a franchise in the Indian Premier League.

But teams are not expecting players in Australia’s white-ball setup to be available for the tournament, with a one-day and Twenty20 series slated against South Africa in August.

Connolly is one of a fleet of West Australians to sign up, including international teammate Josh Inglis, Perth Scorchers captain Ashton Turner, paceman Lance Morris, Ashton Agar and Jason Behrendorff.

Cameron Bancroft — who will be in the UK captaining Gloucestershire — Hilton Cartwright, Tim David, Corey Rocchiccioli, D’Arcy Short and Hamish McKenzie have also thrown their hat in the ring.

Connolly has been listed with a reserve price of 52,000 pounds — around $105,000. It’s the same value placed on Test seamer Scott Boland and fellow Big Bash breakout star Mitchell Owen.

Afghanistan star Noor Ahmad is the only player in the pool with the reserve price of 200,000 pounds, with Inglis, Warner, Glenn Maxwell, Nathan Ellis and Sean Abbott among the Aussie stars on the next tier.

Connolly and Maxwell shared the BBL’s player of the tournament award. The Scorchers young gun hit 351 runs at an average of 50.14.

Morris’ involvement would be closely monitored by Cricket Australia given he has been tightly managed this season.

Cam Green has not nominated, despite spending the first part of the northern hemisphere season playing for Gloucestershire before the World Test Championship final.

The Hundred draft will be held on Wednesday, but there are just eight international spots remaining after franchises had the opportunity to retain players.

West Australian great Simon Katich, who is the coach of the Manchester Originals and has close ties to the Scorchers, could be a key player for the WA hopefuls. Former WA coach Justin Langer is also the coach of London Spirit.
