WA young gun Teague Wyllie’s impressive Sheffield Shield return has created another selection headache ahead of Thursday’s clash against Tasmania at the WACA Ground.

The Rockingham-Mandurah product made the most of his late opportunity in last week’s dominant shield victory over the Tigers in Hobart after coming in for veteran skipper Shaun Marsh, who missed the match due to a finger injury.

Marsh was named in the 13-man squad but didn’t get up for the match, with Wyllie taking his spot at first drop and having an impact in both innings as the reigning champs prevailed by 383 runs to go a step closer to securing a home final at the WACA next month.

In his first Shield appearance since getting dropped in early December following a lean run of form, the 18-year-old made a gritty 28 from 53 balls in the first innings in difficult conditions.

He followed that up with a brilliant 80 from 191 balls to give selectors plenty to ponder this week, with veteran run machine Marsh expected to be available.

Stand-in skipper Sam Whiteman was full of praise for Wyllie, highlighting his efforts on day one alongside century-maker Josh Inglis.

“I think what was even more pleasing than his 80 in the second innings was his 20 or 30 in the first innings when it was seaming around a bit and you’re facing world-class bowlers like Jackson Bird and Peter Siddle,” Whiteman said.

“He looked super compact and really impressive. He’s only 18 and he talks like a 35-year-old, I think there’s big things to come.”

Wyllie played in a winning Shield final in just his second game last season when he was still yet to turn 18.

A win in either of WA’s last two Shield matches, both at the WACA Ground, will be enough to lock in top spot.

They’re currently ahead of second-placed Victoria by nearly 11 points.

The top-two sides clash at the WACA from March 14, while the final is scheduled from March 23.

The strong second XI form of white-ball captain Ashton Turner and prolific ‘keeper-batter Josh Philippe is another factor for coach Adam Voges to consider.

Both scored centuries last week against South Australia with Turner hitting 167 and Philippe 161 off just 119 balls before a player-of-the-match 85 in the Marsh Cup against Tasmania in Hobart on Sunday.

WA’s shield squad is expected to be released on Wednesday.
