Conor Nash: Hawthorn midfielder likely to earn ban ahead of West Coast clash after crude hit on Gryan Miers

Hawthorn midfielder Conor Nash is likely to miss next week’s clash against West Coast and potentially beyond, following a high hit that forced Geelong star Gryan Miers out of action on Easter Monday.

Nash collected Miers head with his right forearm in the third quarter of the blockbuster clash at the MCG.

Miers was assisted from the ground and immediately subbed off by the Cats with concussion.

Nash, who was reported by the on-field umpire, could face at least three weeks on the sidelines with the Match Review Officer likely to grade the incident careless, severe impact and high contact.

The AFL can also opt to send the 26-year-old straight to the tribunal.

Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell told AFL360 he knew Nash would be reported straight away.

“As soon as I saw (Miers) coming off and he was taken out with concussion, then you recognise that’s probably going to be a report and go to the MRO,” he said.

“So, I guess my thoughts first and foremost go to Gryan. Nashy, he doesn’t have a reputation for anything like that, so I’m sure that’s not what his intention was... but leave it to the MRO.”

Hawthorn host the Eagles at Marvel Stadium next Sunday, Richmond at the MCG the following week and Melbourne at the same venue in round nine.

Fremantle forward Patrick Voss was suspended for a similar incident in round five, after Richmond defender Nick Vlastuin suffered a broken nose in a high hit.

The Dockers challenged the three-week striking ban, which was upheld by the tribunal.

Geelong midfielder Tom Atkins is also set to face scrutiny after he dropped a knee into the back of Hawthorn’s Jai Newcombe.
