Big Bash League: Perth Scorchers put all-time crowd record in sights amid orange food revolution

Perth Scorchers have their own all-time Big Bash League crowd record in their sights again this season as they prepare for a packed summer of home blockbusters.

And the hundreds of thousands of fans set to flock to Optus Stadium will be able to get in the spirit with a new range of food - including orange donuts and slushies - at all five home matches.

Veteran bowler Andrew Tye and his daughter Peyton tried some of the stadium’s new treats on Wednesday.

The franchise is expecting a crowd of around 35,500 for their first match of the season against long-time rivals Melbourne Stars, with around 45,000 then tipped to watch them take on Brisbane Heat on Boxing Day.

“We want to smash the league record again — our own record — we are looking at 180,000 across the whole five games and then see what we can do from there once we make it to finals,” Scorchers general manager Jess Keily said.

The donuts are part of a new food range at Optus Stadium to pair with the Scorchers’ themed rounds.

Perth’s country-themed Wild West round on Sunday will feature pulled pork hot dogs, Christmas-leftover ham bagels will be served on Boxing Day and a rainbow slaw chicken burger will be dished up for Pride Round later in the season.

The new range also features spicy nacho bites, corn ribs, steak sandwiches and more for fans to enjoy, as well as the new Curry Pot outlet launched during The West Test last month and the opening of a second Biggie Smalls store.

Tye said he couldn’t wait for the season to kick off.

“It’s always very exciting when Scorchers season comes around. It is such a great place to play, it is a festive time of year and we always have so much fun,” he said.
