Australia’s Ethan Ewing will have to wait at least a further day to continue his surfing world title quest at the Rip Curl Pro, with a second-straight lay day called at Bells Beach.

Organisers of the World Surf League Championship Tour event ruled out resuming the men’s opening round on Sunday and said the next call on the conditions would be made on Monday morning.

Sitting second in the standings behind Brazil’s Italo Ferreira, Ewing is waiting to begin his Bells Beach campaign in a first-round heat against countryman Morgan Cibilic and Hawaii’s Seth Moniz.

Ferreira will be up against Australian Xavier Huxtable and Morocco’s Ramzi Boukhiam.

The other Australian men awaiting opening heats are Jack Robinson, Ryan Callinan, Joel Vaughan and Liam O’Brien.

The first round of the women’s event was held on Friday with Australia’s two-time Bells Beach champion Tyler Wright and fellow Australians Molly Picklum, El Salvador runner-up Isabella Nichols and Sally Fitzgibbons among those to progress.
