West Coast coach Andrew McQualter says no one is safe from the axe if they’re out of form as the Eagles reel from another devastating defeat.

It comes as McQualter was unsure if he got enough from his senior players in their 71-point belting at the hands of Carlton.

The previously winless Blues handed the Eagles a fifth consecutive defeat, smashing them 17.19 (121) to 5.14 (50) in their Gather Round clash at Adelaide Oval on Saturday.

It came on the back of a tough week for the Eagles, who dropped star midfielder Tim Kelly and premiership defender Tom Cole in the wake of their smashing by Greater Western Sydney last weekend.

Only three players – Liam Baker, Jack Graham and Ryan Maric – collected 20 disposals or more as the Blues dominated all aspects of the game

McQualter would not rule out more players being dropped to the WAFL as they prepare for a second-straight six-day break before taking on Essendon at Optus Stadium on Friday.

“Whether it’s our captain or anyone, we’re really open about everyone is in form or out of form and we’ll keep picking the team based on that and the balance,” he said.

“We’re going to continue to support our players. We understand the space we’re in. There’s some pretty flat guys in our room right now as you’d expect.

“We just lost by whatever we lost by and lost in the contest by 60 so guys are hurting but it’s about getting to work. This is AFL footy, it’s hard and we’ve got to keep trying to improve.”

McQualter said he wasn’t sure if he got enough from his leaders against the Blues.

And there was no easy solution to getting them back into form.

“Form is just on the back of hard work, consistency of role,” he said.

“We’ll try to put our senior players in positions where they can influence the game and it’s not always going to be about marks, kicks and handballs.

“There’s other ways they can influence the game by organising roles around them. We’ll keep pushing our leaders to do that.”

West Coast have set several unwanted records in recent seasons, with the latest being an all-time low contested possession count of 77 – 59 less than the Blues.

“We have to improve the craft of it and the skill of it and we have to find people that are better at it,” McQualter said on the damning numbers.

“And it’s one way or the other or it’s both.

“We’ll keep exploring, we’ll keep training as hard as we can, we’ll keep trying to improve the craft and method and we’ll keep challenging our players to find out who wants to live in that space.”
