Socceroos goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne pays tribute to daughter Poppy in world cup qualification celebration

He’s been dubbed the ‘Grey Wiggle’ by Socceroos supporters, but Australian World Cup hero Andrew Redmayne had his daughter on his mind as he celebrated their win over Peru.

Redmayne was brought onto the pitch in the final minute of the Socceroos’ qualification match against Peru, before going on to make a miracle save in the penalty shootout to send Australia to their fifth-consecutive World Cup.

The 33-year-old has become an instant hero on social media, but his wife Caitlin has revealed the face of pure joy he pulled after the save was in tribute to his one-year-old daughter Poppy.

“I must say that’s a tribute to our little girls Poppy, that’s face of his that he pulls always lights up her face,” Caitlin told Channel 9.

“Obviously I’m pretty sure that was for her, it wasn’t him just pulling that crazy. That was pretty special.”

Redmayne’s introduction into the game caused shockwaves in the football world, with captain Maty Ryan benched for the eventual hero.

“He’s had a bit of luck with the penalties of late,” Caitlin said.

“The last few years he’s been working really hard, so we had all eyes on him and we knew he’d pull it off.”

Redmayne has been given the nickname of the Grey Wiggle for his dance routines on the goal line during penalties, something he’s done for years in the sport to try to put the kicker off.

Redmayne is set to become a primary school teacher once he walks away from the game.

The Sydney FC goalkeeper is now becoming a hero of the national sporting stage after the incredible performance.
