NSW teacher faces historical sexual abuse claim involving student at Sydney high school

Witnesses and victims are being urged to come forward over alleged historical sexual abuse involving a high school teacher in Sydney’s south during the 1980s. A teacher allegedly abused a male student at Heathcote High School between 1981 and 1983. The abuse allegedly began when the student was in year 8 and carried out at a school carpark, classroom and public oval located near the school. It’s alleged the teacher plied his victim with drugs and cigarettes during the abuse. NSW no longer has a time limit on child sex abuse compensation claims, enabling victims to pursue a claim for damages regardless of how long ago the abuse occurred. Slater and Gordon lawyer in abuse law Karen Torres confirmed the firm had begun proceedings on behalf of a 55-year-old man. The law firm is urging anyone to come forward with information that may assist. Ms Torres said the alleged abuse had a devastating impact on the victim’s life, which is why they were seeking witnesses and any other victims to come forward and help them get justice, closure and compensation. “Our client alleges to have suffered sexual abuse at the hands of this teacher when he was supposed to be in care of the school,” she said. “What was supposed to be a safe space became the place of deep trauma that has permanently altered the course of our client’s life. “We believe there could be potential witnesses living in NSW or interstate. “If you witnessed this abuse at Heathcote High School, or if you are aware of any other incidents of abuse towards children at the school please, do not hesitate to reach out to Slater and Gordon Lawyers.” Ms Torres said any information would be treated confidentially. A NSW Department of Education spokesman said as this matter was before the court, they were unable to provide any comments. The teacher has not been charged over the allegations and he no longer works at the school.
