Service station and fast food outlet open in Anketell as shopping centre plans approved
A shopping centre has been approved for a growing Anketell site, joining a recently opened fast food chain and petrol station.
Owner Burtonwood Investment Partners Trust and developer Saracen Properties announced McDonald’s Anketell and a United Petroleum service station have opened at the corner of Thomas Road and the planned Treeby Road as part of its first stage of plans for the area.
The 2904sqm United Petroleum site is also available for sale as a leased investment through an expression of interest campaign, with the Australian-owned petrol company signing a 15-year lease.
The Metro Outer Joint Development Assessment Panel granted approval on May 2 for stage two of the development: construction of a 2500sqm supermarket — shown on plans as Woolworths — 13 shop tenancies, a cafe and two professional office tenancies on the first floor.
According to a report presented to the panel on the proposal, Main Roads raised concerns about associated traffic impacts on Thomas Road but the City of Kwinana believed conditions imposed to manage service and delivery vehicles to the centre would mitigate these.
The developer plans to build Treeby Road to connect Anketell and Thomas roads as part of wider subdivision of the area. The report said construction timing was unknown and “may occur following operation” of the shopping centre, but it was expected the development could operate without the road connection.
The panel’s decision said the shopping centre had been envisaged on the site for many years and was “consistent with the requirements of the locality”.
The city labelled the plans for the centre “modern, functional and aesthetically pleasing” and would create an “inviting and pleasant environment for the local community” that would meet a wide range of local needs.
Burtonwood managing partner Chris Weaver said the area was an emerging south metro commercial hub in a prominent position close to Kwinana Freeway and along the connector to the future Westport.
“With a $6 million road upgrade, the precinct is well-connected to major arterial networks and as a result we have already experienced a spike in activity, with major commercial and retail infrastructure mooted for land surrounding the Burtonwood-Saracen town centre development,” he said.
“United Petroleum and McDonald’s Anketell are the first landmark occupiers in the area since the opening of Perth’s second Costco store in 2023 and we’re preparing for significant growth from here.”
The developer has also flagged plans for a proposed childcare to the east of the centre, which would be subject to a separate application.
